The Tampa Bay Buccaneers needed to get faster on offense. And they took a big step in doing so in the 2023 NFL Draft by selecting Trey Palmer from the University of Nebraska. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound wide receiver possesses all the tools to excel at the next level and could be a valuable addition to the wide receiver room.
Palmer started his collegiate career at LSU. He didn’t get much playing time as he was behind future NFL stars Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire. He stayed in Death Valley for the following two seasons increasing his production each year as his role got bigger. In 2022, Palmer entered the transfer portal and ultimately decided on joining the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big 10 for his senior year.
Palmer exploded in his final season of college eligibility. He turned into a 1,000-yard receiver and one of the biggest offensive threats in the conference. He ranked #5 in receptions and #4 in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
Palmer's speed and agility make him a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He has the ability to make defenders miss in the open field and can stretch the defense with his deep speed. His hands are reliable, and he can make tough catches in traffic.
The Buccaneers were in need of a wide receiver while there’s uncertainty of Russel Gage’s recovery time and after losing Scotty Miller to free agency. Miller was the designated “speed guy” for the BUCS over the last few seasons as he made some big catches down the field at times. But he was limited to being a downfield threat in very specific situations. Palmer can potentially be a solid WR3 option for the BUCS and could contribute immediately on special teams as a returner. Deven Thompkins held down the kick returner duties after 2021 4th Round pick Jaelon Darden was released by the Buccaneers in Week 13.
Palmer's selection by the Buccaneers shows their commitment to building a strong team for the future. They already have a talented group of receivers, including Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, but adding Palmer to the mix gives them even more depth and versatility.
